Patriotic license plates available in Hawai'i

Associated Press

Hawai'i residents will now be able to display their patriotism on their vehicles with a new license plate.

The "America United" license plate went on sale today at satellite city halls around O'ahu and at county motor vehicle offices on the Neighbor Islands, officials said.

The plates feature a red, white and blue decal designed by graphic artist Daryl Soon that pays tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The text on the plate reads "America United, September 11, 2001."

Police chiefs across Hawai'i approved the design for the special plates.

On O'ahu, the plates will cost $5 when purchased during the regular renewal fee. Motorists who wish to buy the plates before their regular renewal date will have to pay the $5 fee plus an emblem replacement fee of 50 cents. Maui, Kaua'i and Hawai'i counties will set their own prices.
