A date with 'Sweet Baby James'

James Taylor, whose hits include the 1970 album title track "Sweet Baby James," has had several hits on past pop charts.

Straight from his appearance on last weekend's "Concert for New York" at Madison Square Garden, James Taylor brings his mellow sounds to Hawai'i for a one-nighter, at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Blaisdell Arena.

Tom Moffatt, who is presenting the concert, said several hundred additional tickets were released earlier this week, so seats are still available, though a sellout is expected by showtime.

Taylor, the guitar-strumming crooner dubbed Sweet Baby James, will bring his bulging songbook to the Islands. He is a multi-platinum and Grammy-Award-winning singer-composer, who was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year. In 1998, Taylor also received Billboard magazine's Century Award for his career lifetime achievements. Taylor last performed in Hawai'i in 1995, giving shows on O'ahu and one at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Over the past three decades, Taylor has topped the pop charts with such hits as "Fire and Rain," "You've Got a Friend," "Handy Man," "Your Smiling Face," "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," "Up on the Roof," "Her Town Too," "That's Why I'm Here," "Rainy Day Man," "Shower the People" and "How Sweet It Is."
