Man accused of sex assault

Police arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly broke into a Makiki apartment yesterday morning and tried to sexually assault a 35-year-old woman.

The woman told police she was jarred awake about 1:30 a.m. by an intruder who tried to sexually assault her in her apartment.

She confronted the intruder and the man fled. Police checked the area and found the man. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary and third-degree sexual assault.

Motorcycle crash fatal

A 24-year-old Pearl Harbor serviceman who was injured in an Oct. 18 motorcycle crash on Nimitz Highway has died, police said.

The serviceman died at Queen's Medical Center on Tuesday, police said. He has been identified as Joseph A. Cooper by the city medical examiner.

Police said they believe the serviceman was speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol when his motorcycle crashed on Nimitz Highway.

A witness said the man executed a "wheelie" just before he lost control of his 2001 Suzuki 750 motorcycle just west of the Pacific Street intersection.

The motorcycle fell and the man was thrown. He suffered head, torso and leg injuries, police said. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
