A suspicious envelope received at Mokapu Elementary School tested negative for anthrax yesterday, Marine officials said.

The letter, which contained an unidentified substance, was received at the school Wednesday morning. Mokapu Elementary is a public school on Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe Bay.

School officials immediately reported the envelope to the provost marshal's office, and the room containing the envelope was sealed.

Federal, local and military emergency personnel secured the area as children were dismissed at the normal time of 1:10 p.m. The envelope was analyzed at the Emergency Naval Medical Processing Unit 6 at Pearl Harbor.

Meanwhile, HFD Capt. Richard Soo said that as of 8 p.m. yesterday, there were 16 calls about suspicious mail or substances to the Fire Department. There were no confirmed cases of anthrax or other hazardous substances, Soo said.
