Advertiser Staff

Pearl City High's Jodi-Ann Gum rallied from a sub-par start to capture the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls' individual bowling championship yesterday at Leeward Bowl.

Kailua High junior Bronson Teramoto bowled six 200-plus games to win the boys' crown.

Gum, a sophomore, led Western Division bowlers with a 193 average during the regular season. But she rolled a 150 in the first of her six games.

"I was nervous," she said. "I had pre-game jitters. I just had to calm myself down and do what I had to do."

She did, rolling a 208, 174, 224, 202 and 184 to finish with 1,142 pins.

Teammate Mandi Ishihara was second with 1,130. In fact, five Chargers placed in the top 10. Sky Hieda (fourth, 1,077), Cori Shinkawa (sixth, 1,064) and Tara Lyn Miyamoto (10th, 1,017) were the other Chargers who earned medals for placing in the top 15.

The best high game for the girls was a 247 turned in by McKinley's Paget Kahapea.

Teramoto also rose to the occasion when it mattered. He said he averaged 182 during the regular season, yet rolled 234, 227, 245, 234, 235 and 210 for a 1,385 series.

"I just tried hard," the 16-year-old Teramoto said. "I wanted to do well for my parents, grandparents and uncles. I just got lucky."

Pearl City's Ryan Chang was second at 1,361. He rolled a game-high 289.

Moanalua's Cy Hiyane also rolled six 200-plus games (212, 205, 234, 209, 202, 202); his 1,264 placed him fifth overall.
