Shark sighting closes Maui parks
KIHEI, Maui Authorities cleared the water at four neighboring South Maui beach parks yesterday after a large shark was seen feeding on a turtle near shore.
Several witnesses said they saw the shark feeding in 4 feet of water at about 11:30 a.m. between Cove Park and Charlie Young Beach late in the morning, said Marian Feenstra, chief of Maui County's Aquatics Division.
Authorities cleared the water at not only Cove Park, but also all three Kama'ole beach parks. Water safety crews patrolled the area waters and never saw the animal, Feenstra said.
All beaches later reopened.
