Hayashi, Kop tied in Hawai'i State Open

Brandan Kop and Kevin Hayashi were tied at 4-under 140 yesterday after the second round of the Williams and Associates Hawai'i State Open at Makaha Resort Golf Club.

Kop, an amateur, shot a 73 after an opening-round 67, while Hayashi, a professional, had a 68.

Ed Tischler (72 yesterday) and Beau Yokomoto (69), both professionals, were two strokes back.

Fifty-eight golfers in the championship division made the cut for today's final round, which begins at 7:52 a.m.

Dean Prince has an eight-stroke lead in the senior division after a 72 yesterday and a 140 total.

Christel Tomori (78 yesterday), Sally Soranaka (76) and Michelle Wie (71) share the women's division lead at 151.


VOLLEYBALL

• HPU tops BYUH: Roberta Robert had 28 kills and Andrea Wean added 22 as No. 10 Hawai'i Pacific edged Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-24, 30-27, 29-31, 26-30, 17-15, in a Pacific West Conference match last night at the Cannon Activities Center.

HPU's Nia Tuitele had 60 assists and three service aces.

Xu Dan had 25 kills and Karla Ribeiro added 22 for BYUH.

HPU is 16-2 overall and 10-2 in the PacWest. BYUH is 11-6 and 7-5.


SOCCER

• Wahine shut out: Boise State won its fourth game in a row with a 3-0 victory over Hawai'i in Western Athletic Conference women's soccer at Simplot Sports Complex yesterday in Boise, Idaho.

Boise State scored on an own-goal by UH's Liz Lusk, and goals by Kaziah Hill and Tara Milligan.

UH was unable to score despite five shots on goal, including four by Arlene Devitt.

UH is 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the WAC. Boise State is 8-5-1 and 3-2.


COMMUNITY SPORTS

• Marshallese gathering: Basketball and volleyball leagues for Marshallese people in Hawai'i are starting at 6 p.m. today at Honowai Park in Waipahu.

The leagues run through November.

One of the goals of the leagues is to bring the islands' Marshallese community together, according Bruce Keju, one of the organizers.
