High schools
No. 1 Kahuku completes undefeated regular season

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Even monsoon weather and a proud effort by Wai'anae could not stop the Kahuku High School football team last night at Aloha Stadium.

The Red Raiders, ranked No. 1 in a statewide Advertiser poll and No. 18 in the nation by Student Sports Inc., fought off the wet, blustery conditions to defeat the Seariders, 21-6. The victory boosted Kahuku's record to 9-0 overall and 8-0 in the regular season of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference. The Red Raiders will face Roosevelt (6-2 OIA White, 6-3 overall) at 5:05 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the league playoffs.

Ninth-ranked Wai'anae (6-2, 6-3) will play No. 7 Aiea (8-0 White, 9-0) 25 minutes after the Kahuku-Roosevelt game.

Kahuku went through the regular season without much of a threat, but last night presented a different kind of challenge. Steady, driving rain was a near-constant factor from the opening kickoff until the final whistle.

"On a night like this, we don't want to do too many things," Red Raiders coach Siuaki Livai said. "We do things that are not too risky."

Running back Mulivai Pula led the Red Raiders' ground game through the puddles, gaining 111 yards on nine carries and scoring a touchdown in each of the first three quarters on runs of 11, 10 and 80 yards, respectively. His 80-yard scamper down the right sideline was the first play of the second half and helped give Kahuku a 21-0 lead.

But Wai'anae held the Red Raiders to that total, their lowest OIA output of the season. The Seariders finally mounted a scoring drive of their own late in the third quarter, going 64 yards in 15 plays. Quarterback Kekoa Reyes capped it with a 4-yard touchdown run, but the extra point attempt failed.

Wai'anae's defense held firm in the final quarter, but two fumbles thwarted the Seariders' offense. Kahuku also fumbled twice in the fourth quarter.

"The ball was like soap," Reyes said. "We knew that with the weather, they would make mistakes. They did make mistakes, but we couldn't take advantage."

Still, Livai praised the Seariders, who encountered doubters after early 20-point losses to Castle and Kailua.

"We'll always have respect for Wai'anae," Livai said. "They're always going to come back. If they were to play those teams again, I think it would be a different story. This is a different Wai'anae team. They're a contender."
