The Left Lane
Stars and scribes

In keeping with the "Patriotism" theme of the Honolulu Pen Shop's 10th Annual Pen Fair, the Namiki pen company has donated an unprecedented door prize:

A $1,500 limited edition "Bald Eagle" fountain pen with an 18-karat gold nib. The pen —one of only 150 being offered in the United States, from a total worldwide production of 700 — is lacquered, entirely hand-crafted and signed by the artist.

Pen shop owner Earl Shigemoto says there are other

door prizes, such as a $600 S.T. Dupont Orpheo ruby-and-gold fountain pen. Everything in the store will be on sale throughout the two-day fair.

The pen fair is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 10 and 12, at 1857 South King St., Suite 100. Admission is free. For information call 946-8968.

Interactive CD features Pacific art

Who knows about Pacific arts — besides Pacific people, that is? Not enough, say the folks at Pacific Resources for Education and Learning and the Consortium for Pacific Arts and Culture. That's why the nonprofit groups have developed "Art of the Pacific Islands," an interactive CD-ROM collection of art from Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia.

The images come from the Bishop Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution and other fine collections.

The CD sells for $39.99 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts gift shop (call 441-1400). It's already being distributed to educators throughout the region, but orders have been coming in from Oklahoma and Kansas, too, said PREL director Lori Phillips: "It should make the Pacific more reachable."
