Neighbors help contain fire

Neighbors working with garden hoses helped contain a fire to a single bedroom of a Pearlridge-area townhouse yesterday.

The fire at 98-1444 Ka'ahumanu St. was caused by a 3-year-old playing with matches in a closet, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Richard Soo.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported at 3:44 p.m.

An occupant of the townhouse and a neighbor each grabbed garden hoses and aimed them into the window of the burning bedroom, containing the fire until help arrived, Soo said.

Damage was limited to the bedroom and was placed at $20,000.

Police officer recovering

A Honolulu police officer was in fair condition yesterday after being injured while responding to a crash Saturday near Pearlridge.

Police said the officer was helping to secure the scene where a pickup truck hit a fire hydrant on Moanalua Road at 8:20 p.m. when he was hit by a passing vehicle.

The officer was initially listed in serious condition. His name wasn't released.
