UH-Hilo's Peterson earns 500th victory

University of Hawai'i-Hilo volleyball coach Sharon Peterson got her 500th career victory in the Vulcans' 30-23, 28-30, 27-30, 30-27, 18-16 Pacific West Conference win over Chaminade yesterday at Hilo.

Emily Hutchinson had 19 kills and Sara Pilgreen 18 for Hilo (13-13, 3-8). Julianne Hasert of Chaminade (6-14, 3-8) had a match-high 21 kills.

In 24 seasons with the Vulcans, Peterson is 500-231, including seven national titles.

FOOTBALL

• Free UH student tickets: University of Hawai'i students can receive a free football ticket to the Warrriors' homecoming game against Boise State on Nov. 10.

Kickoff for the Western Athletic Conference game is 6:05 p.m.

Current UH students may pick up their free ticket (one ticket per person) at the Stan Sheriff Center box office from today until Nov. 9 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Students must present a valid UH I.D. or a registration slip.

The ticket giveaway is being sponsored by the University of Hawai'i Alumni Association and Associated Students of the University of Hawai'i.

• UH defeats Nevada: Veronica Flores, Arlene Devitt, Erin Schremser and Tasha Rowe scored goals to lift the University of Hawai'i to a 4-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over Nevada yesterday at Reno, Nev.

Hawai'i is 6-9 overall, 3-3 in the WAC. Nevada is 0-15-1 and 0-5-1.

Kaula Rowe, a 2000 Kamehameha Schools graduate, scored Nevada's only goal, unassisted, at 22:25.

GOLF

• Seki fourth: Stanford's Jim Seki, a Punahou graduate from Honolulu, finished fourth yesterday at The Nelson college invitational tournament at Stanford, Calif.

North Carolina's Justin Walters shot his second consecutive 3-under 68 to win the tournament by two strokes with a 7-under 206. Seki was at (70-69-70) 209.

Washington won the team title with a 13-under 839, followed by Toledo and Stanford at 844. The University of Hawai'i-Hilo finished 14th out of 15 teams with a 894.

Nick Mason was Hilo's highest finisher, shooting a 73 yesterday for a 219, tied for 43rd.
