Police investigate possible hit-and-run death

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police today were investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who was found lying on a Waimalu roadway last night.

A passerby found the man in the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Hekaha Street, near Cutter Ford, at about 11:30 p.m., police said.

The man was identified as Atlast A. Ander by the medical examiner.

Police said three witnesses provided conflicting stories on what happened to the Ander. Police said Ander's injuries did not appear consistent with being hit by a car, and it was unclear if a car struck Ander or if Ander was injured elsewhere.

He was taken to the Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi where he died at 12:11 a.m.

Police have initially classified the case as a hit-and-run. Police said they have no information on the driver or the car involved.

The cause of Ander's death was not immediately known and an autopsy was scheduled for today.

It was O'ahu's 65th traffic fatality this year, compared with 55 at the same time last year. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call HPD's Traffic Division at 529-3499.
