Going for cheap and cheerful

 •  French Festival in town

Want to be glamorous, lavish and ultra-chic but can't afford an ensemble? No problem. Take some cues from French fashion designers and make the look your own — for far less.

• Tie a big black bow around your hair and cock it to the side, a la Coco Chanel.

• Cut up a pair of fishnet stockings (the ones with big pukas) and make a little cap to curtail your curls. Tie an oblong scarf over the caplet et voila! A look inspired by Christian Dior.

• Pile on faux pearls at different lengths, add a few humongous faux cocktail rings and you'll become an ode to Coco Chanel.

• Go ethnic: a wedding kimono over a chic gold paillette shift; buy an embroidered cheongsam in Chinatown; add a short, bright silk Korean hanbok (jacket) over your little black dress.

• Wear pants. The latest look is to layer pants with a skirt over them.

• Make your wrap more important. Pashmina is so passe. Buy a few yards of wide silk taffeta, line it in a complimentary color and throw it around your shoulders for a dramatic entrance.

• Wear heels as high as you can stand.
