Bayanihan dance company returning

The Bayanihan, the National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines, will return to Hawai'i with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The performance will be the company's first here since 1973, when the Bayanihan had a three-day stand.

The show here will cap the company's U.S. tour; it returns to the Philippines after the concert.

The concert showcases classic Bayanihan repertory choreographed by the late Lucretia R. Urtula, a National Artist for Dance of the Philippines, including the "Singkil," the fabled Muslim dance of bamboos, and "Bangko," where dancers balance atop a pyramid of benches. New choreography by Ferdinand Jose also will be featured.

The Pamana Dancers and Pamana Foundation of Hawai'i will present the show here, in conjunction with the Philippine Consulate and the Hawai'i Community Foundation. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for the University of Hawai'i and the School of Philippine Studies.

Tickets: $40, $30; on sale at the box office.
