The O'ahu Interscholastic Association bowling team championships have a two-school flavor.

Division champions Kalani and Pearl City — for both boys and girls — will make up half the field for Thursday's semifinals and finals at Leeward Bowl. First roll is at 9:30 a.m.

In girls' semifinals, East champion Kalani will meet West runner-up 'Aiea and West champion Pearl City will take on East runner-up Roosevelt. The winners play for the championship.

In boys' semifinals, East champion Kalani will meet West runner-up 'Aiea and West champion Pearl City will take on East runner-up Kailua. The winners advance to the championship.

The Pearl City girls made an impressive showing at the individual championships last Thursday at Leeward, placing five bowlers in the top 10. In fact, the five — Jodi-Ann Gum, Sky Hieda, Mandi Ishihara, Tara Lyn Miyamoto and Cori Shinkawa — were among the top eight in averages during the regular season. Gum posted a division-best 193 average.

The Rough Riders are led by Misti Ige and Shelly Shira, who had averages of 171 and 170, respectively, during the regular season. Ige placed seventh in the individual championships.

Kalani's girls are anchored by Dawn Yamane (180 average), Stacie Nakakuni (163) and Louise Shinkothe (150), while Coryn Narikawa (174), Tierra Goshert (155) and Kim Unten (148) lead Na Ali'i.

For boys, Kalani had six bowlers among the top 21 averages during the regular season. They are: Bryce Sumida (184), Robert Fuke (175), Kevin Siu (173), Bryce Okamoto (171), Matthew Arakawa (171) and Nicholas Matsuoka (170). Fuke finished 10th in the individual championships.

Na Ali'i, meanwhile, have five in the top 24 in the West: Toby Sambueno (202), Jason Kotani (202), Darin Villegas (196), Grayson Kealalio (189) and Blaine Morton Jr. (185). The first four bowlers placed in the top 15 at the individual championships. Sambueno placed third.

Pearl City is led by Ryan Chang, who had a 199 season average. The 2000 individual champion placed second at last week's meet. Other top Chargers are Michael Saiki (196), Joshua Wong (190) and Jasen Ono (187).

Kailua's anchor is Bronson Teramoto, who posted six 200-plus games to win the boys' individual championship last week. He is joined by Justin Yamada (177) and Jayce Arakaki (174).

CROSS COUNTRY

OIA championships: Kaiser's girls and Mililani's boys are out to defend their team titles, 3 p.m. Saturday at Nanakuli High. Both teams are trying for their third straight crown.

Back for the Cougars is defending individual champion Ashley Swart, who won the Eastern Division title several weeks ago at the Brigham Young-Hawai'i campus.

Also back for the boys is the Trojans' Jeff Lim, last year's individual champion. He also won the West crown two weeks ago at the same Nanakuli course, as well as the Mililani Invitational.

ILH championships: Different league, same scenario for the private schools' meet set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Kamehameha.

The boys' and girls' individual champions return in Punahou's Todd Iacovelli and Pac-Five's Cristal Cuadra. Both have been weekly winners all season.

Iacovelli won an open meet Saturday at Central O'ahu Regional Park, covering the three-mile course in 16 minutes, seven seconds. Cuadra won at the same meet with a time of 11:57.8 over two miles.
