Isle File
Hawai'i's Martin injured

Advertiser Staff

Starting forward Phil Martin of the Hawai'i men's basketball team severely sprained his left ankle during practice yesterday and could be sidelined for the next month.

Martin, a 6-foot-8 sophomore from Canada, injured the ankle during a half-court scrimmage drill with teammates. He will undergo more tests today to determine the severity of the sprain.

Martin averaged just over nine points and four rebounds per game as a freshman starter last season, and led the Western Athletic Conference in field-goal percentage. He was named to the WAC All-Newcomer team.

If the injury is severe enough to keep him out of action for more than three weeks, Martin would miss the season-opener, Nov. 16 against Norfolk State.

Senior forward Mindaugas Burneika, who was also being considered for a starting position, has yet to practice since straining his left ankle two weeks ago. He is expected to return this week.
