Nebraska's Fonoti vies for national award

Advertiser Staff

Nebraska offensive lineman Toniu Fonoti was named one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award, given annually to college football's top lineman or linebacker.

Fonoti, a 6-foot-4, 340-pound junior, was an all-state player at Kahuku High. He is the second Cornhusker from a Hawai'i high school to be named a semifinalist for the award. Last year, junior center Dominic Raiola, now of the Detroit Lions, was a finalist. Raiola is a graduate of St. Louis School.

Four finalists will be honored Dec. 5 in Houston, where the winner will be announced at a dinner.

Fonoti, one of three offensive linemen in the running for the award, leads the Cornhuskers with 141 pancake blocks, which are blocks that knock defenders off their feet.
