A 19-year-old Hilo man was in stable condition at Hilo Medical Center yesterday after being stabbed in the back Friday at a Big Island state park. Police found the man near a large pavilion at Wailoa State Park about 10:30 Friday evening after hearing about fights in the area.
Firefighters took the 19-year-old to Hilo Medical Center where he was initially classified in critical condition.
Meanwhile, police arrested a 39-year-old Puna man they suspected of stabbing him.
The man was being held at the Hilo police cellblock while the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives continued to investigate the matter.
Big Island man hurt as car flips
A 53-year-old Big Island man was in critical condition yesterday at Queen's Medical Center after his car overturned in South Kohala Friday.
Police said the man, a resident of Pahoa, Puna, was driving his 1978 Buick four-door sedan makai on Waikoloa Road. At about the 10-mile marker, he attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control of the car.
The man was taken to North Hawai'i Community Hospital and later flown to Queens.
Maui police arrest California suspect
Maui police were holding a 28-year-old man wanted in California on charges of manslaughter.
Alejandro "Alex" Martinez, of Southgate, Calif., was arrested Friday in the Honokowai area, Maui police Lt. Lenie Lawrence said.
Martinez, who had lost 40 pounds since being photographed by police on the Mainland, at first denied being the suspect. But a fingerprint check confirmed he was Martinez, Lawrence said.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court warrant charging Martinez with manslaughter was issued Aug. 15. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department informed Maui police Thursday that Martinez might be in the Honokowai area.
Martinez may have been working at a Maui hotel, Lawrence said.
