AARP plans celebrations

Moms have their day. So do dads. Few people usually remember that there is also a Grandparents Day. This year, it's next Sunday. But the AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons) is endeavoring to see the occasion marked in a big way for once by holding Grandparents Day celebrations on four islands.

The free events are to celebrate "the value our kupuna bring our communities and especially the next generation," said Jackie McCarter, AARP Hawai'i associate state director.

The O'ahu and Big Island events will include entertainment, plus keiki activities and other attractions, and the 3rd- and 4th grade winners of an essay contest on "Why I Love My Grandparent" will be honored. The schedule:

  • O'ahu: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kapi'olani Park.
  • Hilo: 11 a.m.-2 .m. Saturday at St. Joseph School gym.
  • Kona: 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Keauhou Shopping Center.
  • Kaua'i: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Lydgate Park.
  • Maui: 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Maui Mall.
