Create your own board game and you rule

Advertiser Staff

You can play by your own rules and have people do what you say. How? You can make it happen by creating your own board game. All you need is poster board, dice, art supplies and some imagination.

Structure your game so players roll the dice and follow the directions on each square they land on. The first to reach the end, wins.

Start by thinking of a theme. Design a Monopoly-type game based on your school or block. Or focus the game on a favorite interest. We built our game around surviving a day at school.

Design your game board on a piece of poster board. Draw at least 25 consecutive squares, and arrange them any way you want — in a figure eight, snaky loops or one big circle. Decorate your board with pics, stickers and glitter. We cut out catchy words and phrases from magazines (from "freaky" to "rebel" to "weenie") and used the phrases to theme each square.

Write directions on each square. Examples from our game include: "You snoozed — and snored — in class. Pick a player to skip a turn for not waking you" and "Surprise! The sub cancels the quiz and shows a film. Advance one space." Also, include squares that make players pick a question card.

Next, make question cards by writing a question on 20 pieces of card stock or heavy paper. Quiz players on crazy stuff, like: "Name three school-lunch dishes that begin with the letter 'M.'" (We used a timer so players had to answer quickly.) Add a reward or penalty. For example: "Advance two spaces for answering correctly; if you answer incorrectly, act the age of your dice roll until your next turn."

Once you're finished, grab those dice. You're ready to play!
