Kahuku remains unbeaten

KAHUKU Just three games into the year, the Kahuku High School football team appears to be in postseason form.
The defending state champion Red Raiders (3-0 overall) looked sharp as ever last night in a 47-0 home victory over undermanned Farrington (1-2) at Carlton E. Weimer Field. Kahuku scored all of its points in the first half, with reserves playing out the second half under a running clock.
The victory pushed the Red Raiders to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference, while Farrington fell to 0-2. The Governors have about 20 players ineligible due to academic probation.
Quarterback Inoke Funaki completed 8 of 13 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown, and tailback Mulivai Pula rushed for 84 yards and one touchdown on eight carries. Perhaps more importantly, the Red Raiders had only one turnover and were flagged just five times for 50 yards. In a season-opening 19-14 win over Skyline (Salt Lake City) two weeks ago, Kahuku was penalized 12 times for 100 yards and had three turnovers in the fourth quarter.
"That's what we've been working on," Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. "Last week against Kaimuki, I think we only had one 15-yard (penalty) and two or three (for) five yards. I'm happy we're getting less and less penalties. We can lose to anybody if we kill drives with penalties or turnovers."
That basically is what happened to the Governors, who struggled to hang onto the ball for the second straight week. Two Farrington fumbles and an interception helped Kahuku build a 27-0 lead midway through the first half.
Defensive lineman Darrell Tachibana recovered one of those fumbles in the end zone for a touchdown, and another fumble later on a punt situation gave the Red Raiders possession on the Governors' 1-yard line. Robert Tu'ifua ran it in from there on the next play to help make the score 34-0 with 3:13 remaining in the half.
Farrington finished with five fumbles, losing three, and also threw two interceptions. Kahuku converted three of those turnovers into touchdowns.
In a 14-0 loss to McKinley last week, Farrington fumbled six times, losing five.
