HPU wins volleyball tournament

Hawai'i Pacific captured the eighth annual Hawaiian Style Classic volleyball tournament, defeating Brigham Young-Hawai'i in the championship game 34-32, 30-22, 27-30 and 30-25 at Hilo.

HPU finished 5-0 in the tournament and is 7-0 overall. BYUH was 4-1 and 5-1. Hawai'i-Hilo finished 3-3 and 4-3.

In games involving Hawai'i teams yesterday, BYUH defeated St. Martin's (Wash.) 23-30, 30-28, 30-23, 30-26; HPU swept UH-Hilo 30-27, 30-16, 30-26 and UH-Hilo topped Simpson (Iowa) 30-15, 35-33 and 30-23.

• Metzger-Wong advance: Stein Metzger of Honolulu and Kevin Wong of Pearl City overcame a slow start to earn a berth in the beach volleyball semifinals at the Goodwill Games at Brisbane, Australia.

After losing the first set 16-21, Metzger and Wong rebounded with 21-11 and 15-12 wins over fifth-seeded Emanuel Rego and Para Ferreira of Brazil. Metzger and Wong face Mariano Barcetti/Martin Conde of Argentina in tomorrow's first semifinal. Eric Fonoimoana and Rob Heidger of the United States are also in the semifinals.


GOLF

• West leads: Mark West shot a 68 yesterday for the opening-round lead of the three-day Barbers Point Invitational at Barbers Point Golf Course.

Del Marc Fujita shot a 69.

Michelle Wie, the 11-year-old Punahou student playing in the championship flight, shot 85.
