Woman killed in car-bike collision

By Karen Blakeman

A 35-year-old woman is dead and two people under arrest for failure to render aid after a car struck a bicyclist near Mililani early yesterday.

Police said the woman was riding her 21-speed, steel gray-colored bicycle in one of the two eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway near Kipapa Street shortly after 12:30 a.m.

She was not wearing a helmet and may not have had lights on the bike.

The two people who were later arrested were in a black Mitsubishi convertible. They approached her from behind at what police suspect was a high rate of speed.

The car struck the bike, throwing the woman onto the roadway, before driving away.

By the time an ambulance arrived, the woman had died, police said.

The two in the black convertible were arrested 20 minutes to half an hour after the accident. They told police they were going to return to the scene. More charges may be filed.

Police suspect alcohol and speed in the accident.

The eastbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway between Kipapa Street and Waikalani Drive were closed for nearly six hours.
