Underage alcohol, tobacco sting planned

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Teens and young adults working with police will attempt to buy cigarettes and alcohol on Kaua'i during the coming year as a means of enforcing liquor and tobacco laws.

In some cases, youths ages 15 to 17 will attempt to buy cigarettes under the supervision of an adult volunteer and a police officer. Clerks who sell tobacco to minors can be fined $500 for a first offense and up to $2,000 for repeat offenses. In other cases, young people ages 18 to 20 will try to buy liquor, again with supervision. Violations can result in fines of up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail.
