KAUA'I

Marijuana busts net 8,462 plants

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A three-day marijuana eradication effort on Kaua'i last week destroyed 8,462 seedlings and mature plants.

The mission included police from Kaua'i, O'ahu, Maui and Hawai'i, state Department of Land and Natural Resources conservation agents and personnel from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Army.

Community group opens Maui office

WAILUKU, Maui — The Hawai'i Community Foundation has opened a Maui office at 2241-B Vineyard St. in Wailuku.

The office, staffed by Maui County foundation officer Lorraine Sato Tamaribuchi and program associate Jill Engledow, provides charitable-giving and grant-making services to residents, community groups and organizations throughout Maui County. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays.

More than $1.47 million in Hawai'i Community Foundation grants was given to nonprofit organizations in Maui County last year.

Tamaribuchi, a Maui native, just joined the foundation after serving as director of development at Maui Community College. Engledow, a former journalist, has been with the organization for almost three years.

The Hawai'i Community Foundation also has Neighbor Island offices in Waimea on the Big Island and Lihu'e on Kaua'i.
