Agbayani will have surgery, miss rest of 2001 season

Benny Agbayani has a broken bone in his right hand.

New York Mets' left fielder Benny Agbayani will have surgery Friday on the broken hamate bone in his right hand and he is expected to miss the last month of the season.

Agbayani, a former St. Louis School and Hawai'i Pacific University standout, injured himself while trying to check his swing in the first inning against the Florida Marlins on Saturday.

He was batting .277 with six homers and 27 RBI this season.
