Hawai'i's Ho leads division at World surfing meet in Ireland

Hawai'i surfer Michael Ho remained in the lead of his age division after the second round of the Quiksilver Masters World Championship yesterday at Bundoran, Ireland.

In wind-blown 3- to 4-foot waves, Ho recorded the best score of the day in the grand masters division (for ages 44 and older). His top three waves received a total score of 20.75, including an 8.0 (out of 10) for one long ride.

After two rounds of competition, Ho is tied for the lead in the grand masters division with 20 points. Bobby Owens of O'ahu's North Shore is tied for second with 17, while Buzzy Kerbox of Maui is in seventh with 14.

In the masters division (ages 35 to 43), Derek Ho won his second-round heat yesterday and is tied for second overall. Hans Hedemann placed second in his second-round heat and is tied for sixth overall.

GOLF

• West keeps lead: Mark West shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday for a five-stroke lead after the second round of the Barbers Point Invitational at Barbers Point Golf Course.

West, who led the first round, was at 138. Casey Kobashigawa (70 yesterday) and Brandan Kop (71) are second at 143. Steven Pleas is at 144 after a 73.

Michelle Wie, an 11-year-old Punahou student, missed the cut (157) after a 75-160.

The tournament ends today.

WATER POLO

• First game, first win: Brigham Young-Hawai'i won its first water polo match in school history yesterday by defeating Chaminade 16-13 at Kaimuki High School pool.

The Seasiders, with 13 freshman on the roster, got five goals from Vanja Kalabic and three from Derek Anderson and Steven Pace.

Chaminade's Peter Samac led all scorers with six goals.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

• 'Aiea routs Kalani: Quarterback Lole Laolagi passed for 262 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a 47-yard score to lift 'Aiea to a 39-0 victory over Kalani in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference game Saturday night at Kaiser High School field.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Metzger-Wong ousted: Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina defeated Hawai'i's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong today in the semifinals of the men's Goodwill Games beach volleyball tournament at Brisbane, Australia.

After winning the first set 21-19, the top-seeded Baracetti and Conde led the fourth-seeded Metzger and Wong 20-16 in the second set. With Metzger serving, the Americans scored four-straight points. Baracetti and Conde recovered to win the last two points to win.

• Hawai'i pair second: Jennifer Kessy and Heather Lowe defeated Danalee Bragado and Lia Young in the championship match of the $30,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour challenger event at Pattaya, Thailand.

Kessy and Lowe, seeded 11th, earned $4,000 for their 22-20, 21-19 victory. Bragado is a Punahou graduate from Makakilo and Young is from Honolulu.

DECATHLON

• 5th to 13th: Hawai'i's Bryan Clay was in fifth place after seven events of the World University Games decathlon in Beijing despite competing with damaged tendons in his left foot, suffered on Saturday. But a series of misfortunes dropped him to 13th in a field of 15 in the final standings.

Despite the injury, Clay ran 14.77 seconds (878 points) for the 110 hurdles while crashing the last hurdle and threw 153 feet, 8 inches (805) in the discus for a decathlon personal best.

But he did not make a height in the pole vault, missing three times at 12-5 1/2. He continued in the competition after the vault, throwing 176-11 (647 points) in the javelin and running 5:12.12 (492 pts) in the 1,500 for a final score of 6,299 points. Raul Duany Bueno of Cuba won the decathlon with 8069 points.

• Burgess digs it: Azusa Pacific junior setter Mahea Burgess, a 1999 University High graduate, was named to the all-tournament team of the 18th Sunbird Invitational volleyball tournament in Fresno last weekend. Burgess had 18 digs in one match. Azusa Pacific finished second behind Fresno Pacific.

• Garbin's winner: Maui's Nicole Garbin scored in the 85th minute to lift Oregon's women to a 1-0 soccer victory over Gonzaga Friday in the season-opener in Eugene.
