With about 600 yards to go in the 32nd annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim yesterday morning, six swimmers were battling for the victory. Then, suddenly, John Flanagan had several strokes on the others.

Trudee Hutchinson, a 20-year-old from Queensland, Australia, comes ashore at Duke Kahanamoku Beach to win the women's race in 57:31.5.

"I caught one little dribble of whitewash for about five or 10 seconds and that seemed to be the difference," said Flanagan, who continued on to a 22-second victory over Mark Leonard of Ann Arbor, Mich.

In winning for the second straight year, Flanagan, 26, covered the 2.384-mile endurance challenge from San Souci Beach to Duke Kahanamoku Beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel in 52 minutes, 40.4 seconds. Leonard, 23, recorded 53:02.2, while Noa Sakamoto, a 15-year-old Punahou School sophomore, took third in 53:04.2.

Finishing 14th overall, Trudee Hutchinson, a 20-year-old resident of Queensland, Australia, captured the women's race in 57:31.5. Amanda Beard, 19, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes now living in Irvine, Calif., was second in 59:29.30. Laurie Vidal, 39, from Orinda, Calif., took third, another 45 seconds back.

"I had no idea," said Hutchinson when asked if she knew where she stood among the women competitors. "I just followed the swimmers ahead of me. It was pretty good going all the way." It was Hutchinson's first attempt in the annual event.

With around 1,000 swimmers, the race got under way at 9 a.m.

Alex Kostich, the 1994 winner who was a close second to Flanagan last year, set the pace for most of the race.

John Flanagan won the Waikiki Roughwater Swim for the second year in a row; women's champ Trudee Hutchinson was 14th overall.

"I took it out fast," said Kostich, a 31-year-old resident of Los Angeles."I thought I'd go out in a blaze of glory. After I made the turn around the last buoy, I looked over my shoulder and saw the pack was continuing on to my left. I should have stuck with them."

Kostich ended up fifth in 53:10, less than a second behind fourth-place finisher Ryk Neethling.

Flanagan said he was concerned when they made the turn for the finish, about a half-mile out from the beach.

"We kind of followed Alex up until then, but the four of us went wide at the buoy,"said Flanagan. "Initially, I thought we might have gone too wide and I freaked out a little. But I guess it worked out for us."

Leonard, Sakamoto and Australian Mark Saliba all reached the beach together, but Leonard was the fastest in the 20-yard run to the finish line.

Saliba edged Sakamoto but was not officially entered in the race.

Finishing fifth overall among the women, Deidre Tennant, 29, was the first female finisher from Hawai'i.
