Ho brothers advance in world masters surf meet

Advertiser Staff

Brothers Michael and Derek Ho both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Quiksilver Masters World Surfing Championship in 3- to 4-foot surf at Bundoran, Ireland.

Michael Ho, the defending grand masters (ages 44-older) champion, amassed a perfect cumulative total of 30 points along with fellow Hawai'i surfer Bobby Owens, and Australians Wayne Bartholomew and Terry Richardson.

Buzzy Kerbox, of Hawai'i, also advanced after scoring 21 points.

Derek Ho, the 1993 world champion competing in the masters (ages 35-43) division, accumulated 27 points, good for a fourth-place tie with Australia's Barton Lynch among the qualifying quarterfinalists.

"I grew up surfing a spot in Hawai'i called Sandy Beach that is almost identical to here, except for the weather," said Derek Ho. "My brother and I were surfing 1- to 2-foot waves before we came over, so I think it's paying off."

Hawai'i's Hans Hedemann will surf-off with three others for the final two berths in the masters division.

VOLLEYBALL

• Tuitele honored: Hawai'i Pacific senior setter Nia Tuitele was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week after leading the Lady Sea Warriors to their fourth consecutive Hawaiian Style Classic volleyball tournament championship in Hilo last weekend.

Tuitele, who was named most valuable player of the tournament, averaged 12.6 assists per game as HPU improved to 6-0 for the season.

Also in college volleyball, the University of Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Mercyhurst College, 22-30, 30-22, 30-22, 30-15; and Chaminade defeated UC Davis, 26-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-23.

BASKETBALL

• Tokoro to play in L.A.: Iolani School graduate Monica Tokoro, a first-team all-state girls basketball player this past spring, will attend California State University-Los Angeles on a partial athletic scholarship.

Tokoro led the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in scoring two of the past three seasons, missing a third title by less than a point per game.

GOLF

• West wins: Mark West won the Barbers Point Invitational after shooting a 1-over-par 73 yesterday at Barbers Point Golf Course.

West finished with a three-round total of 211 to win by two strokes.

Steven Pleas (69) and Brandan Kop (70) tied for second.
