Burning garage described as marijuana farm

Advertiser Staff

A fire in Pupukea Heights led police and firefighters Monday night to what they called an indoor marijuana-growing operation.

Firefighters responded to the 10:49 p.m. alarm at 59-214 Alapio Road and had the fire under control at 11:09 p.m., said Capt. Richard Soo of the fire department.

According to Soo, the fire started in a 1,100-square-foot garage that was being used for surfboard repairs and also contained a marijuana greenhouse complete with climate control and growth lights.

Fire investigators found 18 seedling marijuana plants and 24 ready to pick, Soo said.

Soo said firefighters had to navigate a maze-like layout to reach the heart of the fire.

The owner was not at home. No arrests were made, police said.

The fire caused $15,000 of damage to the building and unknown damage to the contents. Soo said the fire was caused by a faulty air conditioner apparently used as part of the indoor greenhouse.
