Pau Hana 'Ohana meets deadline

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i — Community members hoping to revive the historic Pau Hana Inn said yesterday they have raised the money required to extend an escrow contract for 60 days.

The Pau Hana 'Ohana Foundation finished raising $20,000 over the Labor Day weekend and handed over the cash to inn owner Moloka'i Ranch to meet yesterday's deadline, said foundation member DeGray Vanderbilt.

The ranch required the $20,000 as a nonrefundable fee to extend the purchase contract to allow more time to secure financing.

The foundation wants to reopen the inn as a community-based economic development project.

Puna access road future undecided

KALAPANA, Hawai'i — Volcano watchers must wait a few more days before finding out whether a new access road will be reopened to allow easier visits to the site where lava from Kilauea is pouring into the ocean.

County officials and federal geologists will meet tomorrow to determine what to do about the unpaved access road southwest of Kalapana. A portion was covered by lava Sunday, a little more than two weeks after it opened.

Civil Defense Administrator Bill Davis said one possibility is to bulldoze over the new lava and re-establish the route.

"First, we need more information and time," he said.
