Masters surf meet postponed in Ireland

Advertiser Staff

Competition in the Quiksilver Masters World Surfing Championship at Bundoran, Ireland, was postponed yesterday because of unfavorable conditions.

Organizers are hopeful that a cleaner swell will arrive within the four remaining waiting period days.

Surf yesterday was in the 3-foot range but constant wind played havoc with the lineup.

Three surfers from Hawai'i remain in contention for the grand masters (ages 44-older) title: defending champion Michael Ho, Bobby Owens and Buzzy Kerbox.

Hawai'i surfers Derek Ho and Hans Hedemann are competing in the masters (ages 35-43) division.

ALUMNI REPORT

• Playing for Puget Sound: Four Punahou School graduates and one from Kamehameha are scheduled to be in the starting lineup for University of Puget Sound's football team for its season-opening game Saturday against Simon Fraser.

Senior Bryan Siu and junior David Estermann, both Punahou alumni, are scheduled to start at wide receiver; junior Chad Mahoe (Kamehameha) at tailback; junior Micah Tanaka (Punahou) at cornerback and senior Sky Kitaoka (Punahou) at free safety. Siu and Tanaka also are listed as starting kick returners.

Siu, Mahoe and Kitaoka were second-team All-Northwest Conference selections last year, when Puget Sound had its first winning season in a decade.

Other athletes from Hawai'i on fall sports rosters at Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., are:

Senior defender Trisha Kawamoto of Mililani (Punahou); senior swing Tasha Wong (Punahou), sophomore swing Anela Iaea of Wai'anae (Kamehameha) and freshman defender Kari Hayashi (Iolani) in women's volleyball.

Also, freshman forward Sean Akamine of Kahalu'u (Punahou) in men's soccer.
