A victory over Division I-AA member Montana Saturday on Maui would count toward the total required to make the University of Hawai'i bowl-eligible this season, the Western Athletic Conference said.
A team that plays a 12-game regular season, as the Warriors do this year, requires a minimum of seven victories to be eligible for bowl selection.
Under NCAA rules, a victory over a Division I-AA team may be counted once in a four-year period if the opponent averages 55 or more scholarships over a three-year period.
Montana, according to the WAC office, which said it verified the information with the with the Big Sky Conference, has averaged 61 (of a possible 65) in the past three years. Montana officials said the school has awarded 63 equivalency grants in aid this season.
