The Buzz

Artistry in wood

This dropleaf desk of koa and mango woods, made by craftsman Dave Wendt, will be among the entries in the Hawaii Forest Industry Association's annual wood show and competition that begins Saturday at Pier 10, Aloha Tower. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays, 5-8 p.m. weekdays, through Sept. 16. Admission is free. 841-9495.

Brazilian style

Brazilian Independence Day will be celebrated in extravagant style, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday at Anna Bannanas, 2440 S. Beretania St. The dance-show party will include the West African drumming and dance of First Circle, Brazilian martial arts of Capoeira Hawaii, the Brazilian jazz band Mistura, Shakasamba's music (with Carlinhos de Oliveira, Jose Muntal and Roger Araujo), and the spicy dancing of Samba Axe group (above). The piano

The nimble fingers of Austin Au, Nadine Mitake, Tami Yamashita, Kathleen Endo, Christy Kokami, Brett Imamura, Kristine Ganibe, Raymond Luong and Randi Ozaki will tickle those piano keys in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hawai'i Public Radio's Atherton Performing Arts Studio. These award-winning students from the Ernest Chang Piano Studio will perform works by Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Albeniz, Liszt, Debussy and Brahms, kicking off HPR's Classical Music Month of concerts at the studio. School spirit

Castle High School turns 50 with a celebration that includes dinner, a concert by alumni entertainers and a dance Saturday on the Kane'ohe campus. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria; a concert on the football field follows, with Castle grads performing. The roster includes Teresa Bright, Jesse Rivera, Kawika Kahiapo, 3D (Dwight Kanae, Kawika Kahiapo, Del Beazley) and Justin Kalawaia. A dance follows, till midnight, in the school gym, with music by a deejay and the Castle Jazz Band. The event is a fund-raiser for the 10 Castle complex schools. Latinesque

Latin sounds will fill the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawaii social hall, 1249 N. School St., when "Noche Tropical" gets under way from 6 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature dance music by Los Carinosos, Latin Gentlemen, Boricua Conjunto Musical featuring Julita de Puerto Rico and Augie Rey, Orquesta SalsAloha and more. Latin deejay sounds will be provided by Latin Lady DJ Margarita and DJ Rod. Kaleo O Kalani, featuring Rachel Asevido, will be special guests. The evening, a fund-raiser for the Hawaii Puerto Rican Centennial Aloha Tour to Puerto Rico in November, also will offer food and a silent auction.
