The Left Lane
Get surf on the sand

Everyone needs a good read in the sand. But who wants to carry a bulky, full-sized book? The solution is "Hang 10" (Running Press, 2001). The mini-book measures about three inches high and features a ribbon bookmark with a tiny plastic surfboard tied on the end. The "surf slang" dictionary is filled with colorful photos, fast facts about the history of surfing and comments from surfing legends Duke Kahanamoku and Fred Hemmings, along with current favorites like Kaua'i surfer Rochelle Ballard and surf photographer Aaron Chang, about why they love the sport. Cost: $4.95.

Month of Mondays

Brace yourself. September rolled in, and it may be the most stressful month of the year. Unlike December's holiday blues, this is a month with all the pressure but none of the presents. It is the evil twin of spring fever.

Signs of September's stress:

  • For workers. The boss is full of ideas for you to do. The budgetary year is closing for many companies and the federal government as well, a relentless march to the fiscal year's finale.
  • For business travelers. Hang a calendar and start filling in the dates. "Associations tend to hold meetings all year round, but businesses crank up in the fall," says Julie Barker, editor of Successful Meetings magazine.
  • For investors. Run for cover. Finance experts have long known that Mondays and cloudy days drizzle on the stock market. September, says Gibbons Burke, editor of markethistory.com, "is like a month of Mondays."
  • For families. Changes abound. School kicks off. Car pools, an odious necessity of suburban parenthood, must be rejiggered.
