HO BIZ: It's becoming a regular father-and-daughter (or daughter-and-dad, if you prefer) thing with Don Ho and Hoku. The Waikiiki headliner, back from Los Angeles, joined his pop-music daughter on stage at a KIIS radio concert with Jo Jo Jam at Knott's Berry Farm last week. More than 5,000 fans applauded her four-song serenade which included her hit, "A Perfect Day." Dad's contributions included "Tiny Bubbles," with the crowd (including 10-year-old Hoku fans) singing along. Performers also included O-Town, Eve 6 and Lil' Romeo ...
The latest scoop on Hoku: She'll have a role in a project called "Surfer Girl," to be filmed in the Islands ...
AIR FORCE: Rowdy Walker, morning drive personality on Lava Rock (KAHA-105.9 FM), welcomes a betrothed couple, Theresa and Tony, at 9 a.m. today. (They're keeping their surnames private for now). Theresa won the station's Alaska Challenge last weekend at Consolidated's Ward Cinema (she had to bob for balls in ice water, get involved in Eskimo kissing, wear costumes), earning a trip to Alaska and turning it into a honeymoon journey. Walker is licensed to conduct wedding ceremonies, so the "I do's" will be done live on radio ...
And here's a radio gem: A record 42 stations (could be more by air time) will simultaneously air, at 7:15 a.m. today, the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Mona Lisa," the old Nat "King" Cole hit. It's a preview cut from the upcoming Mountain Apple Co. CD, "Alone in Iz World." "No place in the world is there this kind of aloha to pull a promotion together," said Suzi Mechler of Mountain Apple. She indicated, however, that anyone breaking the time embargo would be banished from access to the actual CD when it officially bows Sept. 25 ...
When Guy Hagi joins KGMB-9 as weather anchor, replacing Ku'ualoha Taylor, he also inherits her cooking show. The culinary stint begins Sept. 29, and look for KSSK's Sweetie Pacarro in a one-minute cooking tip feature ...
Speaking of KSSK: Perry and Price's Hanohano Room show last Saturday attracted Bob Longwell, former Clear Channel Hawai'i honcho (bossman at the KSSK family of stations), who witnessed, for the first time, the station's promotional one-armed bandit that includes an SUV from JN Chevrolet to a future winner. Longwell, now CEO of Clear Channel's Australian Radio Network, is considering a similar promotion for his Down Under stations, particularly if gambling is legal ...
ITEMIZATIONS: At Tiare Vaughan-Darval's first baby lu'au last month at the St. Louis Alumni Association hall, a host of Hawaiian music and hula notables helped Hiwa Vaughan-Darval (past Miss Keiki and Merrie Monarch Miss Aloha Hula solo winner) and spouse Tanner celebrate their keiki's birthday. Auntie Genoa Keawe did her classic hold-the-note "Alika," and a string of others sang or danced, too: Chris Kamaka and Baba Alimoot of Hema Pa'a, Keau Costa and Keahau of Na Palapalai Patch Band, Kimo Alama-Keaulana's quartet, Melia Lobenstein and Ulalia Woodside and their halau, Bill Char, Haunani Pascua, Iliahi Parades, Ipo Vaughan, Puamana Crabbe, Jacelyn Winchester, Mitsuko and the Ko'olau Ballroom dancers, Keali'i Reichel, Puakea Nogelmeier and more. Tiare's grandpa, Palani Vaughan, appropriately did the pule ...
