THOMAS EMIL BASTIS, former president of Ameron HC&D, died at his home here Sept. 1 at the age of 73. See story.

CLINTON R. ASHFORD, prominent Hawai'i attorney and founding partner of the law firm Ashford & Wriston, died Wednesday. He was 76. See story.

JOHN PAUL THOMAS of Kona, a painter who came to Hawai'i in 1965 to teach art for a year and stayed for the rest of his life, died Tuesday at Tripler Army Medical Center. He was 74. See story.

GENOVIVA CLARABAL, 74, of Lana'i City, died Sept. 3, 2001. Born in Pahoa, Hawai'i. A member of the Lanai Senior Center. Survived by son, Manuel; daughter, Christine Costalees; companion, Joseph Garban; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Villaverde.
