Deputy jailed for child abuse
A deputy state sheriff who forced his two young daughters to pick up dog excrement with their mouths as punishment for failing to clean up after a family puppy has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and placed on two years' probation.
Charles Canady, 37, who works at Honolulu District Court, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment and abuse charges on Tuesday.
Canady was also ordered to undergo domestic violence counseling and parental counseling. Canady was accused of making his daughters, ages 10 and 12, pick up the excrement and spit it in the toilet.
Water main break affects 11 homes
A break in a 12-inch water main left 11 homes without water yesterday and forced the closure of a section of Vineyard Boulevard.
The break was detected at about 5 p.m. on Vineyard near Pua Lane. Honolulu Board of Water Supply spokeswoman Denise DeCosta said a water wagon was on the scene to provide the 11 homes with drinking water.
Police closed the eastbound lanes of Vineyard between Palama Street and Pua Lane soon after the break was found. The mauka-bound lane of Palama between King Street and Vineyard also was closed.
DeCosta said work crews will be excavating near the break and were hoping to have the main repaired by this morning.
Waipahu man arrested in assault
Police arrested a 20-year-old Waipahu man after he allegedly hit another man on the head with a hammer Thursday afternoon at Sand Island Park.
According to police, the two men, who are friends, met at Sand Island Park for an after-work get-together about 5 p.m.
A 33-year-old 'Ewa Beach man began teasing the 20-year-old man, who got upset and hit his friend with the hammer. The 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
The 33-year-old man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where he was in critical condition yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Suspect charged in extortion case
Police charged a 49-year-old Wahiawa man in connection with an alleged extortion scheme involving Giovanni's Aloha Shrimp truck in Kahuku.
Carl Charles Depietropaolo Jr. was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree theft, kidnapping and second-degree extortion on Thursday. His bail was set at $100,000.
Police believe that Depietropaolo is one of three men who threatened owner Troy Nistche on Aug. 19 and forced him at gunpoint to sign over Giovanni's Aloha Shrimp and his interest in Giovanni's Aloha Foods in Pearl City to Connie M. Aragona, who was a business partner.
Aragona, 46, was charged with robbery, theft and kidnapping.
Depietropaolo was arrested on Wednesday on a traffic stop at Kamananui and Kaukonahua roads, police said.
