Laolagi leads 'Aiea over Waipahu, 26-14

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

'AIEA — Quarterback Lole Laolagi passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead 'Aiea over Waipahu, 26-14, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference football game last night.

Na Ali'i (3-0, 4-0 overall) won the battle of unbeatens, scoring all of their points in the second half against the Marauders (2-1, 3-1).

Laolagi completed 17 of 30 passes, including touchdowns of 22 yards to Chris Antonio, 80 yards to Reuben Medeiros and 4 yards to Samson Chung.

Although the teams are considered contenders in their conference both coaches said the outcome wasn't as crucial as in would be had it been later in the season.

"It's too early," 'Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "There's still more than half the season left."

Waipahu coach Todd Fujimori said the loss doesn't affect his team's goal.

"Playoffs are our main goal," he said. "We can't lose our focus."

All the scoring came after a scoreless first half in which both teams found ways to hurt themselves.

'Aiea had a touchdown nullified by one of five penalties totaling 69 yards in the first half.

Waipahu hampered scoring drives with two turnovers.

Na Ali'i opened the second half with a 13-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in Laolagi's 13-yard touchdown run.

Waipahu hurt itself with yet another turnover late in the third quarter.

Kawika Raymondo fumbled in Na Ali'i's end zone following a 56-yard reception for a touchback.

'Aiea responded with Laolagi's 80-yard scoring pass to Antonio early in the fourth quarter.

An 'Aiea penalty — roughing the punter — gave Waipahu second life and led to the Marauders' first touchdown of the game, a 19-yard pass from Paulo Aga to Andrew Hale. The PAT failed.
