Isle File
Big Island will host WTA event

Advertiser Staff

Justine Henin, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Sandrine Testud — all Top 20 players on the Sanex WTA Tour — will be on the Big Island this weekend to prepare for the inaugural Big Island Championships.

Qualifying rounds are today and tomorrow at Hilton Waikoloa Village. The 32-player main draw begins Monday. Matches start at 10 a.m. each day, with the exception of the semifinals (Sept. 15) and finals (Sept. 16), tentatively scheduled for noon.

Henin reached the semifinals of this year's French Open. At Wimbledon, she upset Jennifer Capriati to reach the final, where she lost in three sets to Venus Williams. She is currently ranked sixth in the world.

Sanchez is 17th — she has been ranked in the Top 20 every year since 1988 — and Testud 18th. Other players in the Top 50 include Amy Frazier, Lisa Raymond, Marlene Weingartner, Lilia Osterloh and Meilen Tu.

The tournament has a $140,000 purse.

Waikoloa's Kohala Tennis Garden has a stadium court with seating for 500-plus. Admission is $10 daily for the first round (Monday-Tuesday), $15 second round (Wednesday-Thursday), $20 quarterfinals (Friday) and $25 for semifinals (Saturday) or finals (Sunday).

Tickets are available at the gate, or through TicketPlus (808-526-4400). Discounts are available for U.S. Tennis Association members.
