WAILUKU, Maui — With steak and oysters sizzling on a gas grill and a bucket of ti leaves for the game later, Jay Paa of Kihei and a bunch of other University of Hawai'i alumni living on Maui were ecstatic to have a chance to relive their tailgating days at Aloha Stadium.

Paa and his buddies started partying at War Memorial Stadium yesterday when the lot opened at 2:30 p.m., more than three hours before kickoff between UH and the University of Montana Grizzlies.

"A lot of people on Maui don't know what tailgating is about," Paa said.

A couple rows away, UH season-ticket holders Dexter and Dawn Freitas from Kalihi and their 15-year-old daughter, Leah, were sitting with Maui friends Jeff and Laurie Tavares of Makawao. Dexter Freitas said he didn't mind flying to Maui for the game. "I like it, it's something different and it's good that the Maui people have the opportunity to see the game," he said.

And Maui fans got to see a UH victory, 30-12.
