HPU tops UH-Hilo in volleyball match

Roberta Robert had 21 kills and Andrea Wean 20 as the No. 1-ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team rallied past Hawai'i-Hilo, 29-31, 30-28, 30-21, 30-25, last night at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.
The Sea Warriors extended their winning streak to 36 matches in improving to 8-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference.
Heidi Fabritz had 20 kills and 20 digs for Hilo, which fell to 5-5 and 0-2.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Metzger, Wong reach final four: Punahou School graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong advanced to the final four of the $150,000 King and Queen of the Beach Tournament yesterday in Las Vegas.
The final stop of the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour presents a unique format in which players switch partners for each match.
Yesterday, Metzger teamed with Canyon Ceman to defeat Brent Doble and Todd Rogers, 22-20, 18-21, 15-12. Metzger later teamed with Doble to beat Ceman and Rogers, 21-14, 22-20.
Wong teamed with Mike Whitmarsh to beat Lee LeGrande (also from Punahou) and Dax Holdren, 21-19, 21-15.
CROSS COUNTRY
Wahine tie for first: The University of Hawai'i Wahine cross country team opened its season by finishing in a first-place tie at the University of San Diego Invitational yesterday.
Wahine Cheryl Smith celebrated her birthday by winning the 5-kilometer run in 18 minutes 17.9 seconds. Other top-10 finishers for Hawai'i were Casey McGuire-Turcotte (fourth in 19:11) and Courtney Barlow (ninth in 19:45).
The Wahine tied San Jose State with 46 points. Point Loma Nazarene finished third with 76 points.
WATER POLO
BYUH splits: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team split a pair of games in La Jolla, Calif., yesterday defeating La Verne, 12-6, and losing to UC-San Diego, 12-7.
BYUH has a 2-3 record.
MEETING
QB Club: University of Hawai'i assistant football coaches Wes Suan and Kevin Lempa will speak at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda International Ballroom.
Kahuku High football coach Siuaki Livai is also scheduled to appear. Lunch ($7) starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program following at noon.
