Nichols captures Wahine triathlon

Katherine Nichols won the Niketown Na Wahine Sprint Triathlon yesterday at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base.
Nichols, a reporter for The Honolulu Advertiser, finished the .31-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and 2.7-mile run in 56 minutes, 56 seconds.
Susan Burr finished second in 57:10, followed by Tanya Sells in 1:00:07.
Age-group winners were: Allegra Erisman (14-19), Kimberly Nielsen (20-24), Mandy Racines (25-29), Joy Mills (30-34), June Mclain (35-39), Sarah Rogers (40-44), Lorenn Walker (45-49), Heidi Fowler (50-54), Diane McCary (55-59), Carol Murray (60-older) and Tina Eakin (military).
Vickie Viotti, also an Advertiser reporter, completed the event in her first attempt at a triathlon.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Wong is King: Kevin Wong, a Punahou School graduate from Pearl City, captured the King of the Beach title at the $150,000 Paul Mitchell Association of Volleyball Professionals tournament in Las Vegas yesterday.
Lisa Arce, of Redondo Beach, Calif., won the Queen of the Beach crown.
Wong earned $21,000 during the unique three-day tournament in which players switched partners for each match.
Wong clinched the title when he teamed with fellow Punahou graduate Stein Metzger to defeat Mike Whitmarsh and Brent Doble, 21-19, 21-15.
Metzger finished in a tie for third and won $11,000.

Wahine unbeaten: Arlene Devitt scored at 87:34 to give the University of Hawai'i Wahine a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga yesterday at Spokane, Wash.
Devitt powered a shot from the left corner of the box into the right side of the net after drawing Gonzaga keeper Brooke Longacre out of the net for the unassisted goal.
Wahine keeper Nicole Churchill made seven saves, including a late near-miss by Annie Hawkins that deflected off Churchill's fingertips and out of bounds.
Hawai'i (3-0) returns home to play Riverside on Thursday.
