GE plans to buy Adtech parent

General Electric Co. agreed to buy the sensor business of Spirent Plc, a U.K.-based maker of telecommunications-network testing gear and parent company of Hawaii-based Adtech, for about $220 million to widen its factory equipment lines.

Spirent's sensing solutions unit and its 2,000 employees will be absorbed by GE Industrial Systems, the division that makes discrete factory controls and systems. The Spirent unit had $137 million in revenue last year, GE said in a statement.
