The Left Lane
Merry WHAT?

Wipe that summer glow off.

Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Center began offering its Christmas line on the first of this month, opening its annual trim shop in a corner of the first floor. The shop features Christmas-tree ornaments, stockings, nutcrackers and even Halloween ornaments and decorations. The rest of the store's Christmas line will open in November.

According to store managers, customers have already begun their the holiday purchases. Among the most popular items are handmade glass ornaments by artist Christopher Radko, velvet tree skirts, and collectible Santa statues by various artists.

But cash-conscious shoppers, beware — a single ornament can cost anywhere from $3.50 to more than $80.

Other major department stores at Ala Moana Center said they will start their Christmas lines in late October or November. Crafts stores statewide also have begun carrying Christmas crafts and accessories.

Festival seeks help

The 21st annual Hawaii International Film Festival is looking for a few good volunteers.

Those interested in helping with the organization's November film festival should attend the general volunteer meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Kapi'olani Community College cafeteria.

The film festival will run Nov. 2-11 on O'ahu, and Nov. 9-11 on Neighbor Islands.

HIFF is looking for dedicated, enthusiastic people to help in the box office, with hospitality, in publicity and at movie sites and events, among others. Positions include clerical, data entry, ushering and greeting.

But you won't just be giving without receiving: HIFF volunteers can enjoy free screenings, occasional meals, attendance at events and parties, networking opportunities and star sightings.

The 20-year-old organization also is looking for interns for the festival.

For information: Pat Thompson or Lily Kaho'ano, 528-3456, ext. 21. Or e-mail pthompso@hawaii.edu or lily@hiff.org. Or visit www.hiff.org.
