State employees lauded for efficiency efforts

Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono yesterday recognized three state Department of Human Services employees for their efforts to make the department's Vocational Rehabilitation and Services for the Blind division more efficient.

Neil Shim, Cynthia Lefever and Guy Tagomori received Slice Waste and Tape (SWAT) awards for moving from mail to a fax system when requesting and receiving medical records from doctors on behalf of those making claims.

That will save an estimated $20,000 in postage a year, said Lefever, administrator of the division's disability determination branch.

"The idea was the cut down on the time so we can get decisions to people faster," Lefever said.
