UH may cancel weekend's games, Yoshida says

University of Hawai'i athletic director Hugh Yoshida said he is considering canceling this weekend's two Wahine volleyball matches and will learn as early as this afternoon about the status of Saturday's Western Athletic Conference football game between Hawai'i and Nevada in Reno, Nev.

Yoshida said the Wahine's two opponents — Loyola Marymount and Brigham Young University — were scheduled to arrive in town tomorrow, though it is unknown whether those flights will operate now.

The athletic director also said the football team had been scheduled to leave for Reno at noon on Thursday.

Any decision on the game's status will be made by the WAC office.

Yoshida spoke with WAC commissioner Karl Benson this morning and a decision is expected as early as today.

"We're saddened by these events and we just want to do the right thing," Yoshida said.

Nevada athletic director Chris Ault called Yoshida this morning, and both agreed to hold off on any decision until a telephone conference call with Benson.

Benson said the NCAA Division I-A Commissioner's Association has scheduled a conference call for tomorrow to discuss the status on this week's football games. "There's been no decision made regarding the cancellation of WAC events at this time," Benson said.

The UH-Nevada game is the only scheduled conference game among nine involving WAC teams this week.

Yoshida said he asked Ault about the possibility of moving the UH-Nevada game to early December. Yoshida said the WAC and the NCAA would have to approve such a move because of the WAC's window for playing games. UH's final scheduled regular season game is Dec. 1 with BYU.

Yoshida also said the women's soccer team, which was scheduled to return to the Hawai'i today, is stranded in Seattle with no word on when it might be able to return.

The private school Interscholastic League of Honolulu announced it has cancelled today's bowling matches and may cancel other events as well. The public school Oahu Interscholastic Association was meeting on possible action.
