E. Washington hands Wahine first soccer loss

Liz Hail scored on a tap in in the second overtime to lift Eastern Washington to a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i in a women's soccer game at Cheney, Wash.

The Wahine (3-1) lost their first game of the season. Eastern Washington is 1-3.

UH's Natalia Groenewoud gave UH a 1-0 lead on a hard shot from the middle of the box at 48:32. Joelle Sugai was credited with an assist.

Eastern Washington tied the game at 86:12 on a penalty kick by Deszeray Dougherty.

Hail's goal came at 9:34 of the second overtime.

Also yesterday, Hawai'i sophomore striker Arlene Devitt was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Devitt, from Kapa'a, Kaua'i, scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga, and had an assist in a 2-1 overtime victory over Idaho.

GOLF

Brian Sasada advances: Defending champion Brian Sasada defeated his brother, Craig, 2 and 1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship at Makena North Course on Maui.

The first two rounds were played yesterday. Craig Sasada beat Kirk Nelson 1-up to face Brian, who received a first-round bye as the tournament's top seed.

Others advancing to the quarterfinals were Todd O'Neal, Michael Rich, Brendan Moynahan. Doug Bohn, Andrew Feldmann, Tommy Hines and Kevin Hayashi.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played today, and the 36-hole final tomorrow.

In the senior division, Larry Stubblefield faces Rodney Acia in today's 36-hole final. Stubblefield beat Mike Iyoki, 5 and 4, and Acia stopped Rusty Hathaway, 6 and 5, in yesterday's semifinals.

SOFTBALL

Wahine tryouts: The University of Hawai'i Wahine softball team is holding an organizational meeting Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Athletic Complex, room 343.

Tryouts are from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 and Oct. 17 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Interested athletes should bring their own equipment (glove, cleats and practice attire). Bats and balls will be provided.

The Wahine will play in the Fall Softball Classic, an exhibition tournament with Hawai'i-Hilo, Chaminade, Hawai'i Pacific and Brigham Young-Hawai'i on Nov. 16 and 17.

WATER POLO

BYUH loses: California Baptist defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 11-5, in a men's water polo match yesterday at Riverside, Calif.

Freshman Vanja Kalabic scored three goals for the Seasiders.

BYUH plays at Claremont, Calif., today.
