Earl and Mooch welcome friends from the farm Sept. 16 to 22 in observation of National Farm Animals Awareness Week.
'Mutts' lends humor to Humane Society

Move over, Earl and Mooch. Starting Sept. 17, the dog and cat stars of the comic strip "Mutts," seen in The Advertiser Monday-Saturday, will be joined by a few other four-legged friends.

In celebration of the ninth annual National Farm Animals Awareness Week, Sept. 16 to 22, "Mutts" cartoonist Patrick McDonnell will feature cows, chickens and pigs in his strip. The additions are designed to encourage readers to feel compassion for farm animals, he said.

Farm Animals Awareness Week is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. McDonnell has long worked with the organization in the interests of animal protection.

Britney Spears' wild ways don't make her a hero to teenagers.
Teens say moms more alluring than stars

Hard as it may be to believe, Britney Spears, Eminem and other entertainers are not teenagers' first choices for role models.

Asked to name the one person whom they consider to be a role model, nearly half of all students chose a family member — most often their mother, according to a recent survey by the Horatio Alger Association.

After family members, students were most likely to choose a friend as a role model. Entertainers such as artists, writers or musicians placed third, followed by teachers, sports figures and religious leaders.
