Emergency crew, police officers hurt
Three Honolulu police officers, a firefighter and two emergency technicians were treated for minor injuries after a woman threw a chemical concoction on one of the officers yesterday.
Police responded to a call at a West Loch elderly housing complex shortly after 11:30 a.m. about a woman who drank a chemical mixture. One of the three officers at the scene struggled with the 56-year-old woman and had the remaining mixture thrown on him, said fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.
Man pleads innocent in Internet sex case
A 30-year-old Kalihi man pleaded not guilty yesterday to a federal charge of engaging in interstate commerce with the intention of bringing a juvenile girl to Hawai'i so he could have sex with her.
Federal Magistrate Judge Leslie Kobayashi ordered Lando Millare, a library assistant, held without bail while awaiting trial, which is scheduled to begin Nov. 14.
The FBI said Millare struck up an Internet romance with a 13-year-old girl from Medford, Ore., and helped the girl dupe her parents into thinking she was coming to Hawai'i to spend time with a girl her own age.
Spill keeps bay partially closed
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i The northern end of 'Anaeho'omalu Bay in South Kohala remained closed yesterday because of lingering pollution left from a 500,000-gallon spill of raw sewage on Sunday and Monday.
A portion of the southern end of the bay and the beach was reopened Thursday and another 100 yards was removed from the restricted zone yesterday.
But Bob Spetich of West Hawai'i Utilities Co. said results of tests by his staff and the state Department of Health yesterday indicated that the earliest the northern part of the bay can now be reopened is Monday. The tests require 24 hours to determine the outcome.
The spill, regarded as one of the largest reported on the Big Island in recent years, began sometime around midnight Sunday.
